Independent evaluation report shows significant improvements

New report shows “significant improvements’ in pupils’ self-control and management of behavior, social skills, self-awareness, skills for learning and approach to learning.

The report complied by researchers at Brighton University concluded that Challenger Troop courses enable pupils to develop self-assurance, respect, grit, resilience and life-skills. The courses offer some alternative approaches to learning, provide new opportunities, experiences and skills and provide the challenge for pupils to reach their potential in life.

Key findings include:

  • Behaviour assessment’s (undertaken by teachers pre and post a Challenger Troop course) largest improvements were in pupils being less disruptive in class and becoming better at interacting with others
  •  82.5% of pupils reported that they had changed as a result of their Challenger Troop programme and 84% engaged in an activity they thought they were never able to do. Researchers concluded that suggests that Challenger Troop not only challenged but also improved the behaviour of pupils.
  •  67% pupils reported to be more confident and 62% improved the way they live their life as a result of attending a programme
  •  50.4% of pupils in terms 3 to 6 said that improved attendance will stay with them.

This report uses data from school terms 3 to 6 (January to July) of the academic year 2014-15 to provide an evaluation of the CT programmes by school type/programme type and is an addition to previous reports which analysed data collected by Challenger Troop from the academic year 2013-14 and school terms 1 & 2 of the academic year 2014-15.
